Professor Festo Massawe
Lead, Food Systems Diversification Research
Festo is a crop scientist with expertise in crop diversity, sustainable and resilient food systems. He has extensive experience in developing and leading research, training and knowledge exchange activities with partners in Asia, Africa and Europe. His research is focused on promoting food systems diversification and healthy food environments believing that these efforts will lead to a healthy, sustainable and resilient future for everyone

Dr Ajit Singh
Associate Professor
Ajit is an agronomist specialising in smart agriculture and sustainable crop production. He has extensive experience in LED-integrated hydroponic vertical farming, precision agriculture, and nitrogen fixation. Ajit leads projects on converting food waste to wealth and enhancing crop yields through advanced technologies, significantly contributing to sustainable food systems and food security in urban and rural settings

Nurul Imanie Azman
Research Assistant/Technician
Imanie is a research technician with a background in agricultural science and hands-on expertise in both laboratory and field studies. She has extensive experience in crop management, metagenomic studies for identifying plant-associated viruses, and sustainable farming practices. She is passionate about bridging the gap between research and practical applications, striving to promote resilient crop production and sustainable farming practices

Dr Hui Hui Chai
Research Associate
Hui Hui is a crop scientist with expertise in sustainable crop production and improvement. She has farming experience including crop production and management. She has been involved in advancing breeding lines as part of a breeding programme to develop new cultivars and in implementing best farming practices. Her research is focused on promoting sustainable agricultural production systems and tackling food security with resilient and nutrient dense crops

Dr Nurul Ain Azizan
Asssistant Professor
Nurul 'Ain is a dietitian with expertise in public health nutrition. She has extensive experience in researching dietary habits and nutrition-related non-communicable diseases in low-income urban communities. She is particularly interested in hypertension and obesity, examining the dietary patterns of young adults as well as dietary modification and intervention strategies. By analyzing these dietary patterns, she aims to explore their connection to the food environment, as the types of food available and accessible significantly influence people's eating habits, and the risks of developing non-communicable diseases later in life

Dr Chong Yuet Tian
PhD Graduate
Tian is a recent PhD graduate. In her PhD she researched winged bean focusing on its genetic improvement. She has experience in field experimentation, methods in molecular biology and genetics, including genetic mapping, and QTL analysis. Her work aims to develop high-yielding, early-maturing winged bean varieties to promote sustainable and diversified food systems

Dr Vengadeshvaran Sarma
Research Associate
Venga is a development economist with research interests encompassing food security, displacement, and policy evaluation, with a particular focus on Southeast and South Asia. In the realm of food and crop-related research, Venga has examined the significance of crop diversification as a household risk-mitigating strategy to achieve self-sufficiency and ensure food security during conflicts. Venga has also advised World Vision on Food Security and the vulnerability of the urban poor during periods of hyperinflation. With a strong commitment to sustainable development and social entrepreneurship, Venga continues to contribute to policy-oriented research aimed at addressing poverty, inequality, and policy reforms in developing regions

Dr Cheng Shi Hui
Asssistant Professor
Cheng Shi Hui is a dietitian and public health nutritionist. With a strong background in clinical nutrition and as a registered AfN nutritionist (Public Health), she is actively involved in public health research, community outreach, and education. Shi Hui's work encompasses diverse areas, including clinical trial, obesity interventions, sustainable food systems, and alternative protein products. She has a keen interest in promoting health literacy among adolescents, and has organized numerous workshops, and educational programmes to empower communities and foster healthier lifestyles. Shi Hui is an interdisciplinary researcher and she is currently the Programme Director for the BSc (Hons) Nutrition programme at the University of Nottingham Malaysia

Dr Lee Siew Siew
Assistant Professor
Siew Siew is a nutritionist and nutrition scientist specialising in micronutrient deficiency, food environment and maternal and child nutrition. She has led impactful research investigating the syndemic of multiple micronutrient deficiencies and food security, and how food environment - shaped by factors such as accessibility, affordability, and dietary diversity—significantly influence micronutrient status. Her work provides critical insights into integrative interventions aimed at improving maternal and child nutrition, fostering healthier future generations

Dr Anita Chakrabarty
Associate Professor
Anita's research focuses on exploring consumer behaviours using qualitative methods. This includes consumer behaviour in terms of technology use, social media consumption, food and sustainable consumption choices. She is a co-Director of the Future Food research cluster in the University. She has expertise and experience in transdisciplinary research to address grand challenges including food security, circular economy, reduction of waste and climate change. She is the current Director of MSc Programmes, Nottingham University Business School (NUBS) and the lead for Marketing, Entrepreneurship and Innovation. She has consulted for the Ministry of Health/UN World Health Organisation. Anita is a Certified training practitioner in management development programmes

Alex focuses on the use of integrated socio-environmental methods, incorporating spatially explicit modelling, GIS and remote sensing. His current research interests lie in sustainable urban planning, natural resource management, extractive industries, and biodiversity conservation, with a primary focus on Southeast Asia.

Dr Trylee Nyasha Matongera
Post-doctoral Research Fellow
Trylee is an early-career environmental scientist specializing in geospatial analysis for food systems, precision agriculture, invasive species mapping, and biodiversity monitoring. He has extensive experience leading research projects and supervising postgraduate students across institutions in Africa and Southeast Asia. Through targeted capacity-building initiatives, he has developed and delivered tailored training materials for industry practitioners, enabling them to leverage geospatial technologies in disaster management, crop monitoring, and public health. Driven by his passion for climate resilience, Trylee aims to bridge the gap between scientific innovation and on-the-ground implementation. His current research focuses on developing innovative spatial methodologies that advance ecosystem management, fostering sustainable and healthy food systems in the face of climate change.

Dr Ee Von Goh

Ee Von is a public health nutritionist with a diverse professional background in commercial, research, and educational sectors. Her research focuses on the intersection of sustainability, nutrition, and public health, emphasizing people-centred and nutrition-sensitive initiatives. Ee Von has expertise in mixed-method research, policy analysis, and stakeholder engagement and she is skilled in system-thinking and science-policy interface.

Scott David Hastie
FETE Doctoral Trainee
Scott is a First Class Honours BSc Nutrition graduate from University of Nottingham Malaysia along with a 1 year exchange programme in the UK campus. He is currently pursuing a PhD that explores the food environment of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with a focus on characterizing its spatial patterns and understanding how it influences diets and health outcomes. The study aims to uncover the role of the external food environment in shaping dietary behaviuor, particularly among the urban poor, to inform strategies for healthier and more sustainable urban food systems

Su Yuan Koh
FETE Doctoral Trainee
Su Yuan is a First Class BSc Nutrition with Wellness graduate from UCSI University with first class. She is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Nottingham Malaysia. Her research explores the associations between the personal food environment, food purchasing behaviours, dietary behaviours, and nutritional status among the urban poor communities in Malaysia

Xin Xuang Chong (Andrea)
FETE Doctoral Trainee
Andrea is a First Class Honours BSc Nutrition graduate from University of Nottingham Malaysia along with a 1 semester exhange programme in the UK campus. After graduating, she worked in healthcare communications for two years where she learned to strategise, organise, and execute nationwide health initiatives. She also collaborated with the healthcare professionals, industries and media in advancing public health goals.
She is currently pursuing a PhD that explores the influence of food environment on dietary behaviours and nutritional outcomes in peri-urban communities in Malaysia

Elina Stanley Muhomba

Elina is a nutritionist specializing in food environments, nutrition security, dietary-related non-communicable diseases, and maternal and child nutrition. She has extensive research experience across African countries, focusing on the intersections of food and nutrition within diverse food environments. Her work aims to tackle challenges in food security, sustainable nutrition, and public health, with a strong commitment to improving nutrition outcomes

Teng Kang Ni (Connie)
FETE Doctoral Trainee
Connie Teng is a public health nutritionist specializing in the interconnection between food environments and diseases risk in rural communities. Her research focuses on creating sustainable, community-driven interventions to promote healthier food choices and reduce disease risks. With experience in youth nutrition education and innovative data collection methods, she is dedicated to advancing knowledge and fostering collaborations that drive impactful change in public health and nutrition across diverse populations.

Ayesha Ashraf Khan
Research Assistant
Ayesha holds a Master’s in Research (MRes) and a BSc (Hons) in Nutrition with distinction from the University of Nottingham Malaysia. Her research interests include developing novel plant-based protein products, food waste valorization, and advancing school nutrition programs and policies.

She is currently a Research Assistant in the Schools of Biosciences and Education, contributing to the food diversification research team and weekly nutrition and gardening workshops for primary school children.

Jenny Maria Gryzelius
FETE Doctoral Trainee
Jenny is a PhD candidate working on mapping urban community gardens in greater Klang Valley, Malaysia. She has previous experience as policy researcher and lecturer in public policy. She has published peer-reviewed papers on the mitigating effects of institutional strength on economic growth and on climate change mitigation.

Wing Leong Teo
Associate Professor
Wing Leong Teo's research interests include macroeconomics, international finance and monetary economics. Wing Leong has been an academic visitor to the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, the City University of Hong Kong, as well as a consultant for the Central Bank of China (Taiwan). He is also a research fellow of the Centre for Finance, Credit and Macroeconomics (CFCM) and a research fellow and the Malaysia Coordinator for the Nottingham Centre for Research on Globalisation and Economic Policy (GEP). He is currently the Head of School of Economics at the University of Nottingham Malaysia and a "reference expert" for the Parliamentary Special Select Committee on Finance and Economy since November 2023. He provides expertise in time series analysis and urban food flows.
